Aarden Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Indianapolis, Indiana) is a drug discovery and development company. The company’s novel technology is a chemistry breakthrough that will enable it to make drugs against a previously undruggable set of phosphatase (PTP) disease targets. Aarden’s first programs are focused on infectious disease, cancer, autoimmune and metabolic conditions. Aarden Pharmaceuticals has received $700,000 from IU Medical Group Foundation and IEDC/21st Century Fund.
Addiction Therapeutix, Inc. (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) is a developing proprietary in-licensed compounds for the treatment of various addictions and related illnesses.  The company is currently focused on the development of compounds for Alcoholism & Co-morbid Anxiety and Opioid and Nicotine Addiction.  Addiction Therapeutix has received $380,000 in funding from its Founders.
Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc. (Romeoville, Illinois) is a revenue-generating company that has commercialized a form of nanocrystalline diamond film, applied as a coating, which it has licensed from Argonne National Laboratory. The company has received $5.5 million from LaSalle Investments, Illinois Ventures, Nomad Venture Partners, and numerous individuals. Advanced Diamond Technologies is seeking partners and investors who are interested in growing the medical device and diagnostic aspects of the company.
Airway Therapeutics, Inc. (Cincinnati, Ohio) develops novel, proprietary products that potentially have significant advantages over current approaches for the treatment of respiratory diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, COPD, and asthma.  The company’s first product, Surfactant Protein D, is poised to enter preclinical regulated studies leading to clinical trials for the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in early premature infants.  Airway Therapeutics has received $64,000 in funding from BioStart. 
Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. (Cincinnati, Ohio) ) is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of small molecules for the treatment of anemia and vascular disease. Akebia’s lead program AKB-6548 for chronic anemia is completing phase 1 clinical trials and the company expects to file its second IND for AKB-9778 for vascular leak in mid-2010. Akebia Therapeutics has received $21 million from Triathlon Medical Ventures, Novartis Venture Fund, Venture Investors, LLC, Kearny Venture Partners, Athenian Venture Partners, and Sigvion Capital.
AllTranz Inc. (Lexington, Kentucky) is a specialty pharmaceutical in the development of innovative products delivered via unique dermal solutions to treat a variety of neuroscience disorders.  The company leverages proprietary technology to modify existing chemical entities with proven clinical outcomes to produce important new pharma products that extend patent franchises.  AllTranz has received $1.26 million in funding from the Kentucky Seed Capital Fund, Commonwealth Seed Capital, Bluegrass Angels, KSTC GAP Fund, and a Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority Forgivable Loan.  In order to take the lead product through Phase II Clinical Trials in 2011, the company is anticipating a total funding of approximately $20 million.
ApoImmune, Inc. (Louisville, Kentucky) is a biotechnology company developing novel biotherapeutics and vaccines utilizing immunotherapy to fight disease.  The lead product is a novel recombinant protein subunit vaccine being applied to cancer and infectious disease.  ApoImmune has received $8.2 million from Kentucky Seed Capital Fund, Amgen, Inc, and the Kentucky Commonwealth Seed Capital Fund.
AssureRx, LLC (Maineville, Ohio) is a personalized and predictive medicine company providing clinically-relevant information to help physicians select the right drug and the right dose for individual patients.  The company has raised $5 million from Mayo Foundation for Medical Research, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Diamond Healthcare Corporation, Blue Chip Venture Fund, CincyTech USA, and Ohio Tech Angels Fund.
AureoGen Biosciences, Inc. (Kalamazoo, Michigan) is a biotechnology company that is developing novel antibiotics to solve an important and growing problem: the treatment of fungal and (multi) drug resistant bacterial infections.   The company is focused on the optimization and production of natural products-based drugs through genetic engineering of the producer organisms as a cost effective alternative to currently used synthetic chemistry methods.  To date AureoGen has received $7.2 million.
Axenic Dental, Inc. (Kalamazoo, Michigan) is a dental device company with anticipated commercial launch in the spring of 2010 of a patented, disposable high-speed dental drill for use in all patient procedures where a metal reusable drill is currently used. Axenic Dental has received $4.125 million from Angel Investors.
BioSystem Development, LLC (Madison, Wisconsin) creates, manufactures and sells innovative tools to break through critical bottlenecks in biomolecule analysis for biopharm manufacturing, biomarkers and life science research.  The company’s AssayMAPT high throughput micro chromatography platform is currently being sold to major biopharmaceutical companies as application solutions which solve major current challenges in product and impurity quantitation, product variant analysis and manufacturing process development.  The company has received $3.84 million in funding from Silicon Pastures, Marshfield Investment Partners, Chippewa Valley Angel Investment Network, and individual angel investors.
CellCura Inc (Madison, Wisconsin) was incorporated in Wisconsin in 2006 following the foundation of the Norwegian parent company in 2005.  The company began accelerating development of both proprietary IVF product platforms and the R&D stem cell pipeline aided by the technology venture grant.  With offices and industry specific experienced management on both sides of the Atlantic, CellCura is focused on expanding in global markets.  The company has received $6 million from Dag Dvergsten, Miraa Verdi, Merchant Holding, Single Holding/Stolos, Vekst i Grenland (Norwegian Government), and 780 Partners.
Cellectar, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) is a clinical stage radiopharmaceuticals company that designs, develops and manufactures products to detect, treat and monitor a wide variety of human cancers.  Cellectar has demonstrated uptake and specific retention of its product candidates in 45+ tumor types in proof-of-principle animal studies, and anti-tumor activity in ten of these models, including breast, prostate, lung, renal, melanoma, glioma, colorectal, pancreatic, uterine, and ovarian cancer, to date.  The company has received $22 million from Venture Investors, LLC and angels. 
Cellular Dynamics International, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) provides drug screening and toxicity testing products based on breakthrough induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology.  The company is now manufacturing normal human cardiomyocytes at a rate in excess of 1 billion per month and is expanding this product line with novel products reflecting human genetic diversity.  Additional tissue cell types are in development.  Cellular Dynamics has received $30 million from Tactics II Stem Cell Ventures, WARF, and the State of Wisconsin.
Checkpoint Surgical, LLC (Cleveland, Ohio) develops, markets and sells medical devices to locate, evaluate and protect nerves and muscles in surgical procedures.  The company is introducing to the market in 2009 its flagship product, the CHECKPOINT Stimulator/Locator.  Checkpoint Surgical has received $900,000 in funding from JumpStart Inc and angel investors.
Compact Particle Acceleration Corp – CPAC (Madison, Wisconsin) is developing and commercializing the dielectric-wall accelerator (DWA), a platform technology will allow us to create a broad spectrum of disruptive applications, including making the most advanced radiotherapy affordable and accessible.  CPAC has received ~$16 million from Open Prairie Ventures, Wisconsin Investment Partners, Endeavors Group, DaneVest Tech Fund, UW Hospitals & Clinics, and Goshen Health System.
CytoPherx, Inc. (Ann Arbor, Michigan)  is a clinical stage medical device company with a proprietary platform technology intended to treat several large unmet medical and economic needs associated with inappropriate inflammation including Acute Renal Failure, End Stage Renal Disease, Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease and Cardio-Pulmonary Bypass Surgery induced acute inflammation.  The company has received $7 million from Lurie Investments, North Coast Technology Investors, Apjohn Ventures, Dow and Union Carbide Employee Pension Plans, Biosciences Research & Commercialization Center Western Michigan University, and Michigan Strategic Fund.
Dgimed Ortho, Inc. (Minnetonka, Minnesota) has an innovative approach to the accurate placement of distal locking screws used to stabilize the rod-like implants used in the fixation of long-bone fractures.  The proprietary DISTALOCK system is designed to improve productivity by facilitating a faster and more accurate placement of distal locking screws while reducing the amount of x-ray used with current placement techniques.  Dgimed Ortho has received $3.4 million in funding from Cedar Point Capital.
Echometrix (Madison, WI) is a developer of proprietary ultrasound technology, licensed from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, offering a new quantitative approach to the functional analysis of musculoskeletal injuries.  The core technology maps mechanical properties and behavior of a target tissue overlaid on a standard diagnostic ultrasound image.  The product line will improve musculoskeletal injury diagnostics, while lowering cost.  The company has received $300,000 from its Founders and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.
EraGen Biosciences, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) is a commercial stage, in-vitro molecular diagnostic company focused on providing easy-to-use, high quality clinical diagnostic reagents that provide rapid diagnosis of critical diseases.  The current and future products improve the turnaround time for a laboratory to report patient results while decreasing the costs associated with producing these test results.  EraGen Biosciences has received $21 million in funding from First Analysis Corporation, Prolog Ventures, Novartis, Stonehenge, and Continuum.
Flex Biomedical, Inc. (Madison, WI) is developing novel treatments and diagnostics for orthopedic injuries and diseases.  The company has developed a synthetic polymer, the Flex Polymer, to treat osteoarthritis.  Flex Biomedical has also developed the Flex qCTA diagnostic tool to diagnose and monitor cartilage injuries and diseases.  To date the company has received $1.4 million from New Capital, Wisconsin Investment Partners, Marquette Golden Angels, and Boston University.  The company recently relocated from Boston, MA to Madison, WI.
FluGen Inc. (Madison, WI) is an emerging biotechnology company focused on the development, production and delivery of influenza vaccines and associated infectious disease products.  The company has received $2.2 million all from angel investors.
Galera Therapeutics, LLC (St. Louis, Missouri) is developing agents to treat cancer and the serious side effects associated with current cancer therapies.  Galera has received $50,000 to date.
Gentel Biosciences, Inc. (Madison, WI) provides protein microarray products and services to life science research worldwide.  The company’s core technologies allow it to deliver a continually expanding portfolio of protein array systems, kits, and services to the proteomics research and clinical monitoring markets, with emerging application for the in-vitro diagnostics market.  To date Gentel Biosciences has received $10.5 million in funding from Life Capital AS (Norway), NEW Capital Fund, Affymetrix, WARF and Agnitio Science & Technology, Inc.
GWC Technologies Inc. (Madison, WI) develops, manufactures and markets life science research tools, and has customers in industry and academia in 14 countries.  The company recently acquired new intellectual property assets and is seeking equity financing to develop proprietary tools to help pharmaceutical companies choose the best drug candidates to advance from the lab to the clinic.  GWC has received $260,000 from its management team and Wisconsin Investment Partners.
ImmuneWorks, Inc. (Indianapolis, Indiana) is a bio-pharmaceutical firm developing novel antigen-specific therapies and complimentary diagnostic tests for fibrotic lung diseases.  The company has received $3.425 million from Indiana Seed Fund I, Indiana 21st Century Research & Technology Fund, Indiana University Medical Group Foundation and Bohemian Asset Management.
ImmunoGenetix Therapeutics, Inc. (Lenexa, Kansas) is an early stage preclinical biotechnology company developing DNA vaccines, with published primate data completed with NIH funding.  The company has received $2 million to date from Kansas Bioscience Authority, Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation, Beckloff Associates a Cardinal Health Company, and accredited angel investors.
Incept BioSystems (Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a medical device start-up focused on micro-fluidic products to improve the success rates in in-vitro fertilization.  Incept’s first product provides a micro-fluidic environment to culture embryos prior to transfer to the woman.  To date the Company has received $8 million in funding from Venture Investors, LLC, Origio Corporation, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and angel investors.
iRxReminder LLC (Akron, Ohio) delivers a complete SmartPhone based clinical drug trial and behavioral research system for research centers.  The system consists of web-based management software and an iPhone application.  The system is an ideal way to manage and monitor medication taken by patients and study participants.  The software reminds participants to take their pills, delivers interactive surveys, and multi-media educational materials.  The company has received $628,000 from Creative Action LLC, Cogneato Inc, and Summa Health System.
Kappametrics, Inc. (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has developed a revolutionary technology which is able to capture electroencephalography data concurrently with functional MRI without any reliance on post hoc signal called fEEGT, employs patent pending noise cancellation techniques to eliminate the large radio frequency, electrostatic and magnetic noise produced by the fMRI scanner and enables the real-time collection of clean EEG data during fMRI scans.  Kappametrics received $5.25 million in funding from Unilever Ventures.
KemPharm, Inc. (North Liberty, Iowa) is focused on the discovery and development of new chemical entities to treat serious medical conditions through its proprietary and broadly applicable ligand activated therapy (LAT) prodrug technology.  The company has received $7.6 million from DeWaay Investment Partners and individual investors.
m2m Imaging Corp. (Highland Heights, Ohio) is a revenue generating startup spun out of Columbia University and University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.  It operates in the hi-resolution medical imaging market, supplying accessories to major system manufacturers and directly to end users.  The company has received $12 million in funding from Amphion Innovations, Mayport Venture Partners, and Channel Capital.
Metabolic Solutions Development Company (Kalamazoo, Michigan) is developing innovative therapeutics to treat type 2 diabetes and the cardiovascular risks associated with metabolic syndrome. To date they received $21.5 million from Hopen Therapeutics, LLC and South West Michigan First Venture Fund.
Mithridion, Inc (Madison, Wisconsin)is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing drugs for Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and other serious central nervous system disorders.  The company has received $7.4 million from Venture Investors, Rosetta Partners, Rocket Ventures, State of Wisconsin Investment Board, WARF and Wisconsin Investment Partners.
NeoChord Inc. (Minnetonka, Minnesota) is a sterna sparing, beating heart technology for repair of the mitral valve.  Specifically the company enables implantation of artificial chordate tendinea.  NeoChord has received $7.7 million in funding from Clarian Health Ventures, Heron Capital, TGap Ventures, and Twilight Ventures.
Nerites Corporation (Madison, Wisconsin) develops new generations of synthetic bio-adhesives to enhance natural tissue repair, reduce postoperative complications, and degrade safely as tissues heal.  The lead development product is an adhesive mesh for hernia repair.  The company also develops and licenses adhesive technologies to corporate partners for commercialization.  Nerites has received $10.3 million from Venture Investors, Black Mountain Ventures and various angel investors.
NeuWave Medical, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) specializes in developing and commercializing energy based minimally invasive medical devices.  The core competencies in energy deliver, medical system design and miniaturization enable NeuWave to design minimally invasive single use devices for multiple clinical markets.  To date they received $5.7 million in funding from Venture Investors and Advantage Capital.
Novian Health (Chicago, Illinois) is a privately held company with proprietary technology for the treatment of breast tumors using Interstitial Laser Therapy.  The company has developed, tested and patented a minimally invasive procedure which uses controlled heating for the ablation of breast tumors as an alternative to the surgically invasive standard of care, lumpectomy.  Novian Health has received >$8 million from corporates and angels.
OrthoData Inc. (Louisville, Kentucky) has developed a breakthrough diagnostic system that will allow orthopedic spine surgeons to accurately diagnose the success of spinal fusion earlier in the post operative evaluation.  The company is focused on improving patient care and reducing total healthcare costs through improved diagnostic tools.  To date they received $1.31 million from Kentucky Seed Capital Fund, Queen City Angels, Commonwealth Seed Capital Fund, Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation, and Cardinal Venture Fund. .
Phenomenome Discoveries Inc. (Saskatchewan, Canada) uses its patented biomarker discovery technology to discover and validate serum biomarkers in cancer and neurodegenerative disease.  The company’s division is actively working on out-licensing these biomarker tests, while the company’s therapeutic research division is developing drug candidates based on these biomarker discoveries, with a lead candidate in Alzheimer’s disease in late pre-clinical testing.  Phenomenome has received $22.5 million from Tancho Capital and Golden Opportunities Fund.  The company is looking to open offices in the Midwest, USA.
Phoenix Nuclear Labs (Middleton, Wisconsin) is a high tech company specializing in nuclear technologies that are relevant to nuclear medicine.  It currently is developing a new type of device which will fill the radioisotope supply gap without the need for a nuclear reactor.  As such, much of the complicated regulatory, construction, and safety requirements for nuclear reactors are eliminated, reducing the time and cost required to get to market.  To date the company has received $200,000 from the Wisconsin Investment Partners. Quintessence Biosciences, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) is a private, clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel, proprietary, anti-cancer compounds based on its EVadeT ribonuclease technology platform.  The company is currently generating financial support to fund the next stage of clinical development of QBI-139 and further the development of other compounds in the pipeline.  Quintessence has received $15.2 million from individual investors.
Rapid Diagnostek, Inc. (Hudson, Wisconsin) is a development stage company that has developed a patented biosensor platform which offers rapid, high sensitivity test results in 60 seconds, in one-step, without reagents, using a low-cost cell phone-sized instrument to detect pathogens, proteins and bio-molecules in blood, urine, saliva or other liquids.  The company has received $1.3 million in funding from New Capital Management, Peak Ridge Capital, Key Investments, and Perkins Capital.
Ratio, Inc. (Madison, Wisconsin) is a medical device company that is developing a drug delivery technology that will enable low-cost, advanced functionality, drug delivery products.  Ratio has received $700,000 from Wisconsin Investment Partners, Stateline Angels, and the UW School of Business – WAVE.
Shiloh Laboratories (Monona, WI) manufactures and sells the proprietary growth factor supplement Prosen (US and PCT patents pending).  Shiloh addresses the rapidly growing market for research and clinical use of pluripotent stem cells. Prosen is added to standard media to enhance the growth of stem cells in culture by 2-fold and extended the usable lifetime of stem cell culture media by 3 fold.  The sales driver is cost reduction of more than 85% in media and labor costs.
Siloam Biosciences, Inc. (Cincinnati, Ohio) is focused on developing the next generation Quantitative Point-of-Care Test (POCT) platform based on its proprietary microfluidic control and polymer biochip technology.  The company has identified POCT for beta-HCg detection as it primary market entry target with follow on products in the cardiac biomarker POCT segment.
TheraVasc, LLC (Cleveland, Ohio) is a privately-held biotechnology company focused on the development of novel vascular therapies with decreased risks through the repositioning of drugs with known safety profiles.  The company intends to focus on markets with unmet medical solutions in which both patients and clinicians are motivated to enter clinical trials.  TheraVasc has received $100,000 from GLIDE.
Vestaron Corporation (Kalamazoo, Michigan) is developing innovative insecticide products for the environmentally conscious 21st century.  The company’s proprietary products are based on the specific molecular architectures inherent within spider peptides that display broad and potent biological activity against insects but lack any vertebrate toxicity. To date the company has identified and characterized three unique lead insecticide peptide ingredients.  Vestaron has received $6 million from SWMF Life Science Fund, Ann Arbor SPARK, Open Prairie Ventures, Michigan PreSeed Venture Fund and Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
